Woman woke up moments before organs harvested

On October 16, 2009, 41-year-old Caroline Burns tried to kill herself by overdosing on painkillers and muscle relaxants.

She was rushed to a hospital and was totally unresponsive in a deep coma for the next few days. Doctors determined she had suffered irreversible brain damage, and her family decided to take her off life support and donate her organs.

As Burns' body laid on the operating table with doctors about to harvest her organs, she woke up.

After an investigation, hospital officials decided the drugs had caused the totally-unresponsive state and slow brain activity, which doctors mistook for brain damage.

The story is just now being revealed after a US Department of Health & Human Services report on the case was discovered. The hospital was fined $22,000 for the incident.

Burns committed suicide in January 2011.
